EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Baked Clay Prism, also known as the Weld-Blundell Prism, which holds immense historical significance. Inscribed in cuneiform script, this artifact provides a glimpse into ancient Sumerian civilization and their intricate system of governance. The Sumerian King List engraved on this prism traces the lineage of rulers from before the Great Flood to King Sin-magir of Isin, who reigned around 1827-17 BC. This invaluable document sheds light on the names and reigns of kings in central and southern Iraq during that era. Measuring 20 cm in height, this stone prism is currently housed at the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford in the UK. It originated from Larsa, a city located in present-day Iraq. The language inscribed on it is Sumerian – a testament to its importance as a scholarly artifact. Interestingly, while scholars communicated using Sumerian, ordinary people residing in Larsa spoke Akkadian. The region between Tigris and Euphrates rivers was prone to flooding between February and May – an environmental challenge faced by those living there. This photograph captures not only an intricately carved piece but also offers us a window into an ancient world filled with dynasties and cultural exchange. Its preservation within the Ashmolean Museum allows us to appreciate and study our shared human history through artistry and written records like these for generations to come.
