(metal) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 with clasp Chateauguay awarded to Sose Sononsese.
The War of 1812, fought between Britain and the United States primarily on the frontiers of Canada, is today little known in the United Kingdom. Its heroes too are largely forgotten. But the successful defence of Canada helped initiate a new sense of Canadian identity, including even the North American Indians who lived there.
When, in 1813, a United States army first advanced on Montreal, it was defeated by 400 Canadian militia and Canadian Indians at Chateauguay. A second attempt, by 1600 US troops, was also defeated by a mixed force of 800 British soldiers, Canadian militia and Canadian Indians at Chrystlers Farm.
The North American Indians and British soldiers who fought on the British side during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815), had to wait until 1848 before they finally received campaign medals. Sose Sononsese and John Pegeon Omeme were two of only 103 surviving Canadian Indian Warriors to receive their medal. Nevertheless, with this award it might be said that the North American Indians who fought for Canada and the British Empire had at last been remembered.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Military General Service Medal 1793-1814, a significant artifact from the American War of 1812. Created by the British School in the 19th century, this metal medal is currently housed at the National Army Museum in London. The medal features an inscription indicating it was awarded to Sose Sononsese for their participation in the war. The War of 1812, often overlooked in Britain today, played a crucial role in shaping Canadian identity and uniting diverse communities residing there. When American forces attempted to invade Montreal in 1813, they were met with fierce resistance from Canadian militia and indigenous peoples at Chateauguay. A subsequent attack by US troops at Chrystlers Farm also ended in defeat against a combined force of British soldiers, Canadian militia, and indigenous warriors. Remarkably, campaign medals were not awarded to North American Indians and British soldiers who fought during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars until 1848. Amongst only 103 surviving Canadian Indian Warriors recognized with this honor were Sose Sononsese and John Pegeon Omeme. This long-awaited recognition symbolized remembrance for those who fought valiantly for Canada and the British Empire. Through this powerful image captured by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Fine Art Finder, we are reminded of forgotten heroes whose contributions helped shape history while highlighting their enduring legacy within Canada's rich tapestry of national identity.
