During the Afghan War the many tasks of the Royal Engineers, Bengal Sappers and Miners, Bombay Sappers and Miners and Madras Sappers and Miners included road-making, building posts on the line of communication, bridge building across rivers, camp and fort construction, laying telegraph lines and surveying.

This print captures a group of Engineer Officers in Kandahar around 1880. The image, taken by Benjamin Simpson during the 2nd Afghan War, showcases the esteemed individuals who played crucial roles in various tasks undertaken by the Royal Engineers, Bengal Sappers and Miners, Bombay Sappers and Miners, and Madras Sappers and Miners. From left to right, we see Lieutenant F B G D Aguilar, Lieutenant F B Longe, Lieutenant E A Walker, Captain W H Haydon, Major E N Peters, Captain W W B Whiteford, Lieutenant-Colonel J Hills, Lieutenant M J Slater, Colonel O B C St John, Lieutenant J R E Neville, Lieutenants A E Hickson, Dr J B Eaton, Lieutenant W Coles, and Lieutanant C L Young. During this tumultuous period of conflict in Afghanistan's history known as the Afghan War (1878-1880), these officers were responsible for critical tasks such as road-making efforts to improve transportation routes. They also constructed posts along communication lines while building bridges across rivers. Additionally they contributed to camp and fort construction activities. Moreover their expertise extended to laying telegraph lines for effective communication purposes as well as surveying missions. This photograph is part of an album containing 34 images that provide valuable insights into this significant historical era.
