EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Army Gold Cross for the Peninsular War, awarded to Colonel Sir William de Lancey. The intricate metal cross is a testament to his bravery and valor during this significant conflict. The Army Gold Cross bears the battle honours of Fuentes de Onoro, Badajoz, Busaco, and Corunna, symbolizing the pivotal moments in which Colonel de Lancey played a crucial role. Additionally, clasps on the ribbon represent further notable battles such as Nive, San Sebastian, Vittoria, Salamanca, and Talavera. Colonel Sir William Howe De Lancey embarked on his military journey as a cornet in the 16th Light Dragoons back in 1792. Throughout his career, he served across different regions including the East and West Indies before distinguishing himself in the Peninsular War from 1808 to 1814. Tragically, it was at Waterloo where fate dealt its cruel hand. Despite recently marrying and receiving an ennoblement title, Colonel De Lancey met his untimely demise when struck by a ricocheting cannonball while conversing with his commander - none other than the Duke of Wellington himself. His devoted wife stood by him until his last breath in Belgium. This remarkable photograph not only immortalizes Colonel Sir William de Lancey's heroic achievements but also serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice made during times of war. It stands proudly within London's National Army Museum as an enduring tribute to one man's unwavering dedication to duty and honor.
