EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collar badge from the Coorg and Mysore Rifles, a volunteer unit established in southern India in 1884. The badge, made of white metal, features the striking image of a buffalo's horned head. The Coorg and Mysore Rifles originated from the Bangalore Rifle Volunteers but later merged with the Bangalore Rifles in 1917 to form the 6th Bangalore Coorg and Mysore Battalion. However, they regained their separate identity in 1933. Headquartered at Mercara (Madikeri), this auxiliary unit played a significant role in defending India during its existence from 1884 to 1947. In fact, according to historical records, by 1908 it had an impressive strength of 245 members. The collar badge depicted here is part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection housed at the National Army Museum in London. Its intricate design and fine craftsmanship reflect both the pride and dedication that characterized this esteemed military unit. As we admire this artifact captured through photography, we are reminded of the rich history and heritage associated with these brave soldiers who served their nation selflessly. This photograph serves as a testament to their courage and commitment throughout their years of service under various names but always united by their loyalty to protect India's interests.
