Cutty Sark (1869), early 20th century (oil on canvas)

7338117 Cutty Sark (1869), early 20th century (oil on canvas) by Fraser, John (1858-1927); 76.2x116.8 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: John Fraser
A painting of Cutty Sark, the most famous - and the last survivor - of the tea-clippers. These were vessels built to carry the annual tea crop back from India and China in the late 19th century. As the first ship home would be able to command a far higher price for her cargo, speed was essential. This explains their large area of sail and sleek lines. Launched in Dumbarton in 1869, the Cutty Sark was the finest of the tea-clippers, but she carried tea only for eight years. The opening of the Suez Canal, through which sailing ships could not pass, made the tea-clippers redundant. For a decade the Cutty Sark enjoyed new fame and success carrying wool from Australia, but from 1895 until 1922 she suffered neglect under a succession of owners. In 1922 she was bought and preserved by Captain Wilfred Dowman, who had seen her in her heyday. Since 1957 she has been moored in a specially-built dry dock in Greenwich.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas print of the 'Cutty Sark' by John Fraser captures the beauty and history of this iconic tea-clipper ship from 1869. The Cutty Sark was not only the most famous, but also the last survivor of these vessels built to transport tea from India and China in the late 19th century. With its sleek lines and large area of sail, speed was essential for these ships to command higher prices for their cargo. Launched in Dumbarton in 1869, the Cutty Sark carried tea for only eight years before becoming redundant due to the opening of the Suez Canal. However, she found new fame carrying wool from Australia before suffering neglect under various owners until Captain Wilfred Dowman purchased her in 1922. Since then, she has been preserved and moored in Greenwich since 1957, serving as a reminder of a bygone era when sailing ships ruled the seas. This painting beautifully showcases her majesty and significance in maritime history, making it a timeless piece that captures both artistry and historical importance. A true masterpiece that pays homage to one of the most legendary ships ever built.
