The captivating print titled "Encampment of the Kandahar Army, under General Nott" transports us back to a significant moment in history. Taken in 1842, during the British evacuation of Afghanistan, this coloured lithograph vividly captures the scene outside the walls of Caubul (Kabul). Led by Major-General Sir William Nott, the Kandahar Army played a crucial role in defending Kandahar and relieving the besieged garrison at Kelat-i-Ghilzai. Following their successful endeavors, they received orders from Lord Ellenbourough to return to India via Kabul. Arriving in Kabul on September 17th, 1842, just two days after Major-General Sir George Pollock's forces arrived from Peshawar, both armies regrouped and prepared for their journey through treacherous terrain. However, before departing Kabul on October 12th, they released hostages and sought revenge by blowing up the bazaar. As depicted in this print created by Lieutenant James Rattray and engraved by R Carrick and Day and Son respectively; we witness an encampment bustling with activity as soldiers prepare for their arduous retreat. The rearguard led by General Nott faced harassment along their way but managed to navigate through without major opposition. This historical artwork serves as a powerful reminder of military triumphs amidst challenging circumstances.
