English warships at anchor in a calm, drying sails, early 18th century (oil on canvas)

7337760 English warships at anchor in a calm, drying sails, early 18th century (oil on canvas) by Monamy, Peter (1681-1749); 77.2x107.8x2.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Peter Monamy
Oil painting, hitherto (to July 2014) entitled An English ship becalmed, attributed to Peter Monamy, but which is more accurately described as showing them at anchor in a calm drying sails. The three-decker flagship on the right flies the Union at the main, indicating the presence of the Commander-in-Chief (i.e. the Royal Navy's senior serving admiral). The other vessels are private naval ships (under captains in terms of rank) except for what may be a large armed merchantman, possibly an Indiaman, in broadside view back left, flying a Union as an ensign, another smaller merchant ship to its left in starboard-bow view, and a small Dutch trading vessel (possibly a dogger) left centre. In the left foreground a ship's boat takes out an officer - perhaps the Commander-in-Chief - since also flying Union at the prow, and to its right is an inshore fishing boat in which two men are drawing in a net. The two warships at centre are firing salutes. The likely location of such an assembly is the Downs off Deal, though the location is not specific. While the picture is attributed to Monamy it bears no obvious signature and may be by a follower.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas painting by Peter Monamy captures a serene moment in the early 18th century, as English warships are depicted at anchor in a calm sea with their sails drying in the gentle breeze. The three-decker flagship on the right proudly flies the Union flag at the main mast, indicating the presence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy. The scene also includes other naval ships under captains' command, as well as merchant vessels such as an armed Indiaman and a Dutch trading vessel. In the foreground, a ship's boat is seen taking out an officer - possibly the Commander-in-Chief - while nearby fishermen work diligently to draw in their net. The location of this gathering is likely off Deal in the Downs, although it is not specified. The two warships at center can be seen firing salutes, adding to the sense of activity and importance surrounding this assembly. While attributed to Peter Monamy, this painting bears no obvious signature and may have been created by one of his followers. Regardless of its exact origins, this artwork beautifully captures a moment in maritime history when English naval power reigned supreme on calm waters.
