Silver and gilt badge with the unit monogram and number on crossed lances, surmounted by the Prince of Waless feathers and motto, Ich Dien, inscribed on a scroll.
This unit was originally raised in Lahore during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) by Captain Frederick Wale. After Wales death in 1858, Major Dighton Probyn took over command of the unit, renamed the 1st Regiment of Sikh Irregular Cavalry. It was initially under the control of the Government of the Punjab but in 1860 authority was transferred to the Commander-in-Chief, India. The regiment served in China during the 2nd China War (1857-1860). Re-designated the 11th Bengal Cavalry the unit returned to India in 1861, adding Lancers into its name in 1864.
The unit became the 11th (Prince of Waless Own) Regiment of Bengal Lancers in 1876, reflected in the inclusion of the Prince of Waless feathers in its insignia. After merging with the 12th Cavalry in 1921 the unit became the 5th King Edwards Own Probyns Horse. The regiment survived the partition of India as the 5th Horse, an armoured regiment of the Pakistan Army.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Helmet badge of the 11th (Prince of Wales's Own) Regiment of Bengal Lancers, dating from 1876 to 1901. Crafted with silver and gilt, this emblem is a true masterpiece. The badge features the unit monogram and number displayed on crossed lances, elegantly topped with the Prince of Wales's feathers and motto, "Ich Dien" inscribed on a scroll. The history behind this remarkable regiment is equally fascinating. Originally raised in Lahore during the Indian Mutiny by Captain Frederick Wale, it was later commanded by Major Dighton Probyn after Wale's untimely death. Renamed as the 1st Regiment of Sikh Irregular Cavalry under Probyn's leadership, it served in China during the Second China War before returning to India in 1861. Incorporating "Lancers" into its name in 1864, the regiment eventually became known as the 11th (Prince of Wales's Own) Regiment of Bengal Lancers in 1876 when it adopted the Prince of Wales's feathers as part of its insignia. Following a merger with the 12th Cavalry in 1921, it transformed into the illustrious 5th King Edward’s Own Probyn’s Horse. Remarkably surviving through India’s partition as an armored regiment within Pakistan Army called "5th Horse" this historic unit has left an indelible mark on military history. This extraordinary photograph print captures not only a stunning piece but also commemorates a rich legacy that spans continents and centuries.
