EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Pugri badge of the Calcutta Volunteer Lancers, dating back to 1872-1881. Crafted in silver, this badge features four lances and the unit's CVL monogram, symbolizing their valiant service as part of the Indian Army Cavalry Reserve. The pugri or pagri, seen here adorning this headdress, holds great significance within Indian culture. It represents tradition and honor, serving as a distinguished mark for those who wear it with pride. The Calcutta Volunteer Lancers played a crucial role in India's military landscape during their existence. They paved the way for the establishment of the renowned Calcutta Light Horse - an auxiliary unit that formed part of the Indian Army Cavalry Reserve. However, with India gaining independence in 1947, this esteemed cavalry regiment was disbanded. Preserved at London's National Army Museum as part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection, this photograph immortalizes not only a stunning piece of craftsmanship but also pays homage to all those who served under its banner. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of the bravery and dedication exhibited by these troops throughout history. Their legacy lives on through artifacts like this Pugri badge - symbols that connect us to our past and inspire future generations to uphold values such as courage and patriotism.
