Sabretache badge, Bihar Light Horse, 1884-1900 (metal)

5927509 Sabretache badge, Bihar Light Horse, 1884-1900 (metal) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Sabretache badge, Bihar Light Horse, 1884-1900.
Silver badge in the form of an elaborate BLH unit monogram.
A sabretache is a type of satchel strapped to a cavalry or horse artillery officers belt. Although originally a container for orders and maps, by the mid-nineteenth century most sabretaches had a purely decorative role.
After the Indian Mutiny of 1857 concerns about future unrest and the threat to the European minority in Bihar led to The auxiiary formation of an unofficial corps. It was raised as a defence force by planters of the Tirhoot and Chapra districts in Bihar, India. The Soubah Behar Mounted Rifles Volunteer Corps was formerly established in 1862.
The units commander petitioned the Secretary to the Government of India for the unit to be allowed to carry lances but this request was declined and the men were issued with carbines.
The auxiiary formation grew in size and reputation. In December 1883 the men of the Bihar Light Horse were invited to Calcutta to participate in exercises and drills. On 4 January 1884 the unit took part in the Proclamation Day proceedings where they were commended for their appearance by General Wilkinson, Commanding in Calcutta.
Over fifty members of the Bihar Light Horse volunteered for service in the Boer War and were enrolled in Lumsdens Horse in 1900.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Sabretache badge of the Bihar Light Horse, dating back to 1884-1900. Created by the British School in the 19th century, this metal badge is now housed in the National Army Museum in London. The silver badge features an intricate BLH unit monogram and represents more than just a decorative item. Originally used as a satchel for orders and maps, sabretaches like this one held great significance for cavalry or horse artillery officers. The Bihar Light Horse was formed as an unofficial defense force by planters from Tirhoot and Chapra districts in Bihar, India after concerns arose following the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Although their request to carry lances was declined, these brave men were issued with carbines instead. Over time, this auxiliary formation grew both in size and reputation. In 1883, they were invited to Calcutta to participate in exercises and drills during Proclamation Day proceedings where they received commendation from General Wilkinson. In 1900, over fifty members of the Bihar Light Horse volunteered for service in the Boer War and were enrolled in Lumsdens Horse. This exemplifies their dedication and commitment to serving their country. This print not only captures a beautiful artifact but also tells a story of bravery, resilience, and loyalty that resonates through time. It serves as a poignant reminder of those who have sacrificed for our freedom.
