EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the Scinde Campaign Medal 1843, awarded to Herberao Pulundah of the 12th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry. This metal medal showcases the Queen's head on one side and the name of the battle on the reverse. The Scinde Campaign saw three different medals issued for the battles of Meanee, Hyderabad, and Meanee and Hyderabad, all dated 1843. The significance of this campaign is highlighted by Sir Charles Napier's Anglo-Indian army defeating the Baluchis of Sind at Meanee on February 17,1843. Despite facing over 5,000 casualties themselves, Napier's forces managed to inflict heavy losses upon their opponents with only a cost of 256 lives. The following day witnessed many chief Baluchi emirs surrendering and their capital city Hyderabad being occupied. This historic event marked a turning point in British colonial history in India as it showcased their military prowess against local resistance. The Scinde Campaign Medal serves as a tangible reminder of Herberao Pulundah's participation in this significant chapter. Displayed at London's National Army Museum, this print offers viewers an opportunity to delve into India's rich past while appreciating its artistic value.
