Victoria Cross group awarded to The Hon Lieutenant Frederick Hugh Sherston Roberts, Kings Royal Rifle Corps (metal)

5921064 Victoria Cross group awarded to The Hon Lieutenant Frederick Hugh Sherston Roberts, Kings Royal Rifle Corps (metal) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Victoria Cross group awarded to The Hon Lieutenant Frederick Hugh Sherston Roberts, Kings Royal Rifle Corps.
Freddy Roberts (1872-1899), the only son of Field Marshal Lord Roberts, was the first person to be awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross (VC) after an action at Colenso on 15 December 1899.
Alongside several others he tried to save the guns of the 14th and 66th Batteries, Royal Field Artillery, when the detachments serving the guns had all become casualties or been driven from their guns. Some of the horses and drivers were sheltering in a donga about 500 yards behind the guns and the intervening space was swept with shell and rifle fire. Lieutenant Roberts with two other officers, W N Congreve and H N Schofield, helped to hook a team into a limber and then to limber up a gun. While doing so, he fell badly wounded and later died of his injuries.
His gallantry had been observed by General Sir Redvers Buller who recommended Roberts for the VC in a despatch written on 16 December, before Roberts had died from his wounds. He was also awarded Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee Medal 1897; Indian General Service Medal 1854-95, with clasp: Waziristan 1894-95; India Medal 1895-1902, with clasp: Relief of Chitral 1895; Queens Sudan Medal 1896-97; Queens South Africa Medal 1899-1902, with clasps: Relief of Ladysmith, Natal; Order of the Medjidie, Turkey, 4th Class; Khedives Sudan Medal 1896-1908, with clasp: Khartoum.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the prestigious Victoria Cross group awarded to The Hon Lieutenant Frederick Hugh Sherston Roberts of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Created by the British School in the 19th century, this metal artwork is currently housed at the National Army Museum in London. Lieutenant Freddy Roberts, son of Field Marshal Lord Roberts, holds a significant place in history as he became the first person to be posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross. His heroic actions took place during an intense battle at Colenso on December 15,1899. In an attempt to save the guns of the Royal Field Artillery's 14th and 66th Batteries, which had been left unmanned due to casualties and enemy fire, Lieutenant Roberts courageously joined forces with officers W N Congreve and H N Schofield. Together, they managed to hook a team into a limber and successfully limbered up one of the guns. Tragically, during this valiant effort, Lieutenant Roberts sustained severe injuries that ultimately led to his untimely death. General Sir Redvers Buller witnessed Lieutenant Roberts' gallantry firsthand and promptly recommended him for the Victoria Cross before his passing. In addition to this highest military honor bestowed upon him, Lieutenant Roberts was also recognized with various other medals including Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Medal and several campaign medals for his service in India and Sudan. This remarkable photograph immortalizes not only an extraordinary individual but also serves as a poignant reminder of bravery and sacrifice on behalf of their country.
