McGuire won the VC during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) for actions at the storming of Delhi on 14 September 1857. As the assault troops waited at the Kabul Gate, ammunition was being carried up on to the ramparts to be put into a small magazine, but before it could be safely stowed away, three boxes exploded and two were set on fire by enemy shot. McGuire and Drummer Miles Ryan, seeing the danger of the fire spreading, seized the two burning boxes and threw them over the ramparts, thus saving many lives. Ryan was also awarded the VC.
James McGuire was born at Enniskillen, Ireland where he became a labourer by occupation. On 29 March 1849 he enlisted at Enniskillen for ten years in the Honourable East India Companys Service. He sailed for India in the troopship Ellenborough, where he arrived on 10 October 1849. McGuire served in the Burmese War (1852-1853), where he received the Medal with a clasp for Pegu. After his service in the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), McGuire was discharged on 16 May 1859 to a pension of one shilling a day. In 1862 McGuire forfeited his decoration when he was convicted of felony.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Victoria Cross awarded to Sergeant James McGuire of the 1st Bengal European Fusiliers in 1857. The image, captured by the British School in the 19th century, is housed at the National Army Museum in London. Sergeant James McGuire's heroic actions during the Indian Mutiny earned him this prestigious honor. On September 14,1857, as assault troops awaited orders at Kabul Gate in Delhi, danger loomed when enemy shots ignited ammunition boxes on the ramparts. Recognizing the imminent threat of a spreading fire and potential loss of lives, McGuire and Drummer Miles Ryan fearlessly seized two burning boxes and hurled them over the ramparts. Born in Enniskillen, Ireland, McGuire began his journey with ten years of service for the Honourable East India Company after enlisting on March 29,1849. He had already demonstrated bravery during his participation in Burma War (1852-1853), where he received a Medal with a clasp for Pegu. Sadly though, despite his remarkable military career and selfless acts of heroism that saved countless lives during battle, McGuire's life took an unfortunate turn when he was convicted of felony in 1862 and subsequently forfeited his well-deserved decoration. This powerful photograph serves as a reminder not only of Sergeant James McGuire's extraordinary courage but also highlights both triumphs and tribulations faced by those who have served their countries throughout history.
