EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an extremely rare cannon from 1790-91, made of bronze and attributed to Pali Ahmad, an 18th-century artist. The cannon was cast at the prestigious royal foundry in Seringapatam for Tipu Sultan, famously known as "The Tiger of Mysore". The cannon's design is truly remarkable, featuring a tapering form with intricate details. Low astragals and fillets segment the progressive stages of the cannon, while leaves adorn the muzzle's edge. Raised cartouches filled with inscriptions add further elegance to its appearance. Notably, two bubri-shaped cartouches on the chase display the founder's name and date of manufacture according to Mawludi calendar. An elongated ogival panel on the second reinforce provides information about load and weight, while another panel indicates Patan (Seringapatam) as its place of origin. The first reinforce bears a talismanic device incorporating letters H/Y/D/R for Haydar. Finely cast tigers' heads embellish the muzzle, trunnion ends, and cascable button - this last one also serving as a ring for elevating screw. Despite some dents in the cascable button, this exceptional piece remains unweathered with traces of early gold-painted finish. Preserved in private collection today but immortalized through this photograph by Bridgeman Images courtesy eChristies Images; it serves as a testament to both artistic craftsmanship and historical significance associated with Tipu Sultan's reign during that era in India.
