EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Andrew Robinson Stoney-Bowes in all his glory. Created by John Downman in 1781, this red and black chalk masterpiece showcases Stoney-Bowes' distinguished profile and traditional Georgian attire. Stoney-Bowes, an Anglo-Irish adventurer hailing from Greyfort House in County Tipperary, Ireland, is best known for his scandalous marriage to Mary Eleanor Bowes, the Dowager Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Their tumultuous relationship earned her the title of "The Unhappy Countess" a tale later fictionalized by William Makepeace Thackeray in The Luck of Barry Lyndon. In this portrait, Stoney-Bowes exudes confidence with a flushed cheek and a typical Irish charm. His oval face is framed by a meticulously styled hairstyle that reflects the fashion trends of the time. As a member of parliament and prominent politician, he carries himself with an air of authority befitting his status. Displayed at the Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge in the UK, this artwork offers us a glimpse into both history and artistry. It serves as a reminder not only of Stoney-Bowes' intriguing life but also how his story inspired Stanley Kubrick's award-winning film adaptation, Barry Lyndon.
