The Destruction of the Spanish Fleet outside Santiago Harbour (colour litho)

8661465 The Destruction of the Spanish Fleet outside Santiago Harbour (colour litho) by Lacy, Charles John de (c.1860-1936) (after); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Destruction of the Spanish Fleet outside Santiago Harbour. Admiral Cervera, in command of a squadron, was sent to Cuba at the commencement of the Spanish-American War to protect Spanish interests, and took refuge in Santiago harbour on 19 May 1898. On 29 the American fleet, under Admiral Sampson, blockaded Santiago, as it was found impracticable to attack the enemy's ships inside the harbour. The desperate effort made by Cervera on 3 July to save his ships by escaping to sea resulted in the total destruction of his squadron by the Americans, and the capture of the Spanish admiral himself. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant colour lithograph captures the dramatic scene of The Destruction of the Spanish Fleet outside Santiago Harbour during the Spanish-American War. Admiral Cervera, commanding a squadron to protect Spanish interests in Cuba, found himself trapped in Santiago harbour by the American fleet under Admiral Sampson. Desperate to save his ships, Cervera made a daring attempt to escape on July 3rd, only to meet total destruction at the hands of the Americans. The artist Charles John de Lacy masterfully depicts this pivotal moment in history with vivid colours and intricate details. The chaos and devastation of battle are palpable as smoke billows from sinking ships and sailors scramble for safety. The tension between light and dark adds depth to the composition, emphasizing the gravity of this historic event. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of war and the bravery displayed by those who fought on both sides. It is a testament to human resilience in times of conflict and stands as a tribute to all those who have sacrificed for their beliefs. Displayed prominently, it sparks conversation and reflection on our shared past and its impact on our present world.
