Fasanerie / Pheasantry (colour litho)

8666169 Fasanerie / Pheasantry (colour litho) by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) (1856-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Fasanerie. Translation: Pheasantry. The breeding of the noble pheasant already played a role on the domains of Charlemagne alongside the breeding of peacocks and partridges. In the 11th century the pheasant was mentioned as a monastery meal. The refinement of the food led to the establishment of pheasantries, in which whole families of pheasants are either kept wild (i.e. free) in wooded areas or tame (artificially) in fenced areas. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning colour lithograph captures the beauty and elegance of a Fasanerie, or Pheasantry, where noble pheasants are bred and cared for in lush surroundings. The tradition of breeding these majestic birds dates back to the time of Charlemagne, when they were kept alongside peacocks and partridges on royal estates. In the 11th century, pheasants were considered a delicacy fit for monastery meals, highlighting their status as a symbol of wealth and luxury. As culinary tastes evolved over time, so did the practice of creating specialized habitats for these regal birds. The illustration depicts a scene from Deutsche Kulturbilder, showcasing the meticulous care taken in maintaining pheasantries. Whether kept wild in natural wooded areas or tamed within fenced enclosures, entire families of pheasants are nurtured to perfection for both aesthetic pleasure and gastronomic delight. Through this artwork by Christophe (Colomb), we are transported into a world where nature's beauty is carefully cultivated and preserved for generations to come. The intricate details and vibrant colours bring to life the rich history and cultural significance of these magnificent creatures within their carefully curated habitats.
