Weinbrunnen Und Ochse / Wine Fountain and Ox (colour litho)

8666175 Weinbrunnen Und Ochse / Wine Fountain and Ox (colour litho) by Christophe (Colomb, Georges) (1856-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Weinbrunnen Und Ochse. Translation: Wine Fountain and Ox. The desire to let the people take part in state events such as coronations gave reason to offer something for the palate in addition to the pageantry of the driveways, triumphal arches, etc.: Fountains for red and white wine were built, which donated 16 Oxhoft (4800 liters) from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934).); © Look and Learn

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning colour lithograph captures the grandeur and extravagance of the Weinbrunnen Und Ochse, or Wine Fountain and Ox, a spectacle from centuries past. Created by artist Christophe (Colomb, Georges) in the early 20th century, this piece transports us to a time when state events like coronations were marked not only by elaborate processions and ceremonies but also by lavish feasts for the people. The image depicts a large fountain overflowing with red and white wine, symbolizing abundance and celebration. In the background, we see an ox being roasted whole, surrounded by wild game and poultry - a feast fit for royalty. This tradition of providing food and drink to the masses during important occasions speaks to a desire to include all members of society in moments of national significance. As we gaze upon this historical scene, we are reminded of the power of art to preserve cultural practices and traditions long gone. The intricate details captured in this print allow us to imagine ourselves among the crowds enjoying the festivities surrounding the Weinbrunnen Und Ochse. This artwork serves as a window into a world where opulence was on full display, inviting us to ponder how such customs have evolved over time. It is a testament to human creativity and ingenuity in finding ways to bring joy and unity through shared experiences.
