EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive design of the Mechanics Institute in Newcastle upon Tyne, created by John Storey in 1863. The building, depicted here with intricate ink and watercolor on paper on card, was a significant hub for intellectual and industrial development during its time. Originally established in Blackett Street in 1824, the Literary, Scientific and Mechanics Institution later moved to this splendid new location on New Bridge Street. Architect Thomas Oliver Jr. , renowned for his architectural prowess, designed this neoclassical masterpiece that catered to workers' engineering classes and hosted enlightening lectures on emerging industrial advancements. The institution boasted an extensive library that served as a valuable resource for knowledge seekers. In 1880, the Mechanics Institute merged with the City Library but not before bidding farewell to its neighboring medieval Carliol Tower which was unfortunately demolished during this transition. This photograph captures a vibrant street scene bustling with pedestrians traversing New Bridge Street against the backdrop of this magnificent edifice. Bridgeman Images has beautifully preserved this piece of British history through their fine art collection. As we gaze upon this painting today, we are transported back to an era where education and innovation thrived within these grand architectural marvels.
