EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Ritual Wine Vessel, Fangzun, from the Shang Dynasty. Standing at an impressive height of 52.4 cm, this bronze vessel is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the Chinese School during that era. The vessel's design is truly awe-inspiring, with its four sides adorned in horizontal registers divided by vertical notched flanges. These intricate details are repeated at the corners, adding to the overall symmetry and visual appeal. The centerpiece of this fangzun is its tapering mid-section, which features large taotie masks with dragon-shaped horns. Flanking these masks on either side are descending kui dragons, creating a sense of movement and dynamism within the artwork. Moving down towards the high foot of the vessel, one can observe more taotie masks below a narrow register of confronting kui dragons with hooked beaks. The canted shoulder boasts an elaborate band of confronting kui dragons centered by relief animal masks and separated by mythical birds crowned by monster masks with bottle horns on each corner. Every element in this piece has been meticulously cast in crisp relief and reserved on leiwen grounds. Its smooth dark green patina adds depth and character to its surface while some areas display light malachite encrustation.
