A Dutch ship close-hauled, c.1610 (oil on panel)

7337734 A Dutch ship close-hauled, c.1610 (oil on panel) by Anthonisz, Aert (c.1579/80-1620); 25.4x38.1 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Aert Anthonisz
Aert Anthonisz (1579-1620) was born in Antwerp, but moved to Amsterdam at an early age, presumably around 1590. Stylistically his seascapes betray a Flemish influence. The small panel of two Dutch three-masters off a rocky coast gliding through glassy-green waves with elegant white crests is characterized by the typical simplification and stylisation of the natural form, which is generally associated with the 16th century tradition of the Southern Netherlands. The same is true for the beholder's high viewpoint, which allows an overview of the deck of the three-master sailing before the wind at the centre of the composition. All details of the ship's rigging, such as the reef-points, are displayed with great merit. The artist, therefore, clearly distinguished between the rendering of nature and the man-made world. The meaning of the depicted action remains unclear. It is difficult to determine whether the ship is trying to escape both the rocks on the right and the Dutch battleship in the left background, or whether there is no specific narrative or allegorical meaning attached to the image. Images like this, possibly dated around 1610, laid an iconographic and stylistic basis for the development of the Dutch seascape later in the 17th century.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil painting by Aert Anthonisz captures the essence of Dutch maritime art in the early 17th century. The Dutch ship close-hauled, gliding through glassy-green waves with elegant white crests, is a masterpiece of simplification and stylization typical of the Southern Netherlands tradition. Anthonisz's attention to detail is evident in his rendering of the ship's rigging, showcasing his skill and precision as an artist. The high viewpoint allows for a comprehensive view of the three-master sailing before the wind at the center of the composition. The meaning behind this scene remains enigmatic - is the ship trying to evade danger from both rocky shores and a looming battleship in the background? Or is there a deeper narrative or allegorical significance that eludes us? Regardless, this painting serves as a foundational piece for Dutch seascape art in later centuries. Its influence on future artists can be seen in its iconographic and stylistic elements, setting a standard for maritime art to come. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this print transports viewers back to a time when ships ruled the seas and artists captured their beauty with unparalleled skill.
