EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Lieutenant-General Raymond A. Wheeler, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia, alongside a brigadier director of transportation in April 1945. The two military officers are seen walking along the pier at Kalewa, exuding an air of authority and determination. Photographed by M/Sgt William L Widmayer from the SEAC Photo Unit (US), this image is part of a collection documenting World War Two in the Far East. It provides a glimpse into the construction efforts taking place on the Chindwin River during that time. The shipyard depicted was instrumental in building river barges and boats crucial for wartime operations. These vessels were constructed using local lumber or prefabricated sections imported from Great Britain, America, and Canada. Indian troops and Burmese as well as Indian civilians worked under British supervision to complete these projects. Lieutenant-General Raymond A. Wheeler's presence highlights his significant role as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia during this critical period of history. His collaboration with other high-ranking officials ensured smooth logistics and transportation operations throughout Southeast Asia. As one of 29 official photographs taken by British authorities, this image serves as a valuable historical artifact capturing an important moment in military history. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, it offers viewers a window into the collaborative efforts undertaken to support Allied forces during World War Two.
