EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored aquatint print titled "Fort Maxwell, 1820" takes us back to the early 19th century and offers a glimpse into an important historical event. The artwork is part of the Stapleton Collection and depicts a scene from John McLeod's book, "Voyage of His Majesty's Ship Alceste, to China, Corea, and the Island of Lewchew". The illustration showcases Fort Maxwell in all its grandeur. Situated in East Asia during Lord Amherst's embassy to China in 1816, this fort played a significant role during that time. The British soldiers stationed at Fort Maxwell can be seen proudly raising the Union Jack flag against the backdrop of lush greenery. Uniformed figures dotting the encampment add depth and realism to this historic representation. The presence of both British soldiers and Chinese locals highlights the cultural exchange that took place during this period. Published by John Murray in London in 1820, McLeod's account also sheds light on how tragedy struck when HMS Alceste sank off Sumatra on its return voyage from China. This incident led to four books being published about Lord Amherst's embassy. Bridgeman Images has beautifully preserved this piece from English School (19th century) as part of their private collection. It serves as a reminder not only of military history but also of cross-cultural interactions between nations during an era marked by exploration and discovery.
