EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a bodyguard to Francis I during the 16th century. Dressed in ceremonial garb, this member of the first company, Ecossaise (the Scots), stands tall and proud, armed with both a sword and halberd. The handcolored illustration by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard beautifully captures the intricate details of the bodyguard's attire. Lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie from Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867 as a continuation of Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri's earlier series on costumes from the 12th to 15th centuries. Georges Duplessis himself was an esteemed curator at the Bibliotheque nationale who dedicated his career to preserving historical prints. Meanwhile, Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard was not only an artist but also a talented book illustrator and interior designer for various public buildings and churches. The attention to detail in this artwork is truly remarkable; every brushstroke brings life to this historical figure who once protected one of France's most influential rulers. This print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and historical preservation—a visual window into a time long past that continues to captivate viewers today.
