EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Flemish military attendant from the 16th century, brought to life by the talented artist Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard. Dressed in a loose jacket with wide green sleeves and grey hose adorned with crimson slashes, this soldier exudes an air of strength and elegance. With his lance firmly grasped in one hand and a short dagger at his side, he embodies the bravery and skill of warriors from that era. The hand-colored illustration beautifully captures every intricate detail of the attire, highlighting the craftsmanship involved in creating such elaborate costumes. The lithography work by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie further enhances the richness of colors and textures. Originally published as part of Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) in Paris during 1867, this image is a testament to Duplessis' dedication to preserving historical fashion through his series on costume history.
