EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Gaspard de Coligny, a prominent figure in French history. Gaspard de Coligny, also known as Seigneur de Chatillon and Marechal de France, was a nobleman and admiral during the 16th century. In this image, he is depicted wearing a scarlet tabard adorned with his coat of arms - an intricately blazoned eagle. The tabard drapes over his suit of armor while his helmet and gloves rest on the ground nearby. Handcolored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, F. Laguillermie for Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), this illustration captures the essence of Gaspard de Coligny's regal presence. The book itself was part of a series that explored historical costumes from various periods published by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri starting from the 12th century to the 15th century. Georges Duplessis, curator at Bibliotheque nationale during that time period, continued their work with this publication. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard played a crucial role in bringing these historical figures to life through his artistic talents as an illustrator and interior designer for public buildings and churches. This stunning print allows us to appreciate both the artistry behind its creation as well as gain insight into one of France's most influential military leaders from centuries past.
