EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a young adolescent from Holland during the 17th century. The original painting by Pierre van Slingelandt, displayed in the Louvre, beautifully captures the essence of this era. Handcolored and lithographed by talented artists such as E. Lechevallier-Chevignard, A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie for Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. The book itself was a continuation of an earlier series on costumes from the 12th to the 15th centuries by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri since 1830. Georges Duplessis, curator of the Prints department at Bibliotheque nationale at that time, curated this remarkable collection. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard's artistic skills shine through his handcoloring technique used to bring life to this image. His expertise as an artist and interior designer for public buildings and churches is evident in every detail captured within this portrait. As we gaze upon this young adolescent's countenance frozen in time, we are transported back to a period filled with rich history and cultural significance. This print serves as a window into Holland's past during one of its most influential periods.
