EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the essence of chivalry and devotion embodied by the Knight of the Order of Our Lady of Misericorde and Knight of the Order of the Glorious Virgin Mary. Founded in 1230 by Pierre Nolasque and Raymond de Penyafort, the Order of Our Lady of Misericorde was established for the noble cause of redeeming Christian brothers held captive by Moors. Over time, it evolved into a purely religious order dedicated to acts of mercy. On the other hand, the Order of the Glorious Virgin Mary, founded in 1233 by Barthelemy, focused on restoring peace through military means while prohibiting ostentatious displays such as wearing golden spurs. Members were affectionately known as Merry Brothers for their dedication to this mission. The intricate details captured in this hand-colored copper engraving from "Images historiques des costumes des principaux peuples de l'Antiquite et du Middle Ages" evoke a sense of history and tradition that these knights upheld with honor. The image showcases their elaborate attire and weaponry, symbolizing their commitment to serving both faith and duty. As we gaze upon this timeless depiction, we are reminded of a bygone era when valor and piety were intertwined virtues cherished by those who took up arms in service to God and humanity.
