by Raven, John Samuel (1829-77); Private Collection; (add.info.: Raven was the son of a very talented amateur painter, a clergyman, and like his father first painted in the manner of Constable and Old Crome until he fell under the spell of the Pre-Raphaelites, and abandoned sober darks to paint with joyful glazes of pure colour, directly from nature (Ruskin, Academy Notes, 1857). He has a lyric quality not usually associated with Pre-Raphaelitism.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Sussex Lane, 1872" by John Samuel Raven showcases the artist's transition from traditional landscape painting to the vibrant style of the Pre-Raphaelites. The image captures a serene countryside scene in England, depicting a picturesque lane flanked by lush green fields and tall trees. Raven's unique approach is evident in his use of joyful glazes and pure colors, which infuse the artwork with an unexpected lyric quality. This departure from conventional dark tones reflects his admiration for nature and desire to capture its essence directly on canvas. The composition also features various animals that add life and movement to the scene. A flock of sheep peacefully grazes along the lane while a horseback rider gracefully navigates through them. The presence of these farm animals further enhances the rural atmosphere, evoking a sense of tranquility and harmony with nature. As we delve into this mesmerizing piece, it becomes clear that Raven's artistic journey was one marked by experimentation and growth. His ability to merge elements from different artistic movements resulted in a truly remarkable creation that defies categorization. This photo print, part of a private collection now housed at eThe Ms Gallery in London, allows us to appreciate Raven's innovative vision as well as experience firsthand the beauty and charm of English countryside life during this period.
