EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting print captures the leg bone of Lieutenant John Fraser, a brave soldier who lost his right leg in 1782 during the Siege of Gibraltar in the American War of Independence. Despite this devastating injury, Fraser continued to serve and eventually rose to the rank of general, even receiving a knighthood for his valor. After his passing at the age of 83 in 1843, Fraser's wish was to have his leg bones interred with the rest of his body at St Barnabas' Church in West Kensington. However, during repairs on the church vault, these precious relics were removed from their resting place. The image serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and dedication to duty. It speaks volumes about the resilience and courage displayed by soldiers like Lieutenant John Fraser in times of war. The preservation of such artifacts allows us to honor and remember those who gave so much for their country. As we gaze upon this piece of history, we are reminded not only of Lieutenant Fraser's personal story but also that countless individuals throughout history have made similar sacrifices for causes greater than themselves. Their legacy lives on through relics such as this one, telling tales that must never be forgotten.
