The image represents the sculptural group of Italian Giulio Tadolini, preserved in the basilica of the Sanctuary: at the foot of the Virgin and Child a same soul is depicted on the left still in purgatoria, in flames and chained by sin, on the right as she is welcomed into glory by the Bambin Gesu who crowns her with flowers. To her are addressed the pilgrims who travel every year to her Sanctuary in Normandy, built in the 19th century on the initiative of Father Paul-Joseph Buguet with the intention of comforting those suffering for a painful loss, and help him process mourning with the consolation of helping one's dear on the path to forgiveness in the communion of prayer.
