The destruction of the French warships or Little Boney (Napoleon Bonaparte, 1769-1821) and his friend Talley (Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, 1754-1838) in great joy

MMM5481988 The destruction of the French warships or Little Boney (Napoleon Bonaparte, 1769-1821) and his friend Talley (Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, 1754-1838) in great joy by Gillray, James (1757-1815); (add.info.: The destruction of the French warships or Little Boney (Napoleon Bonaparte, 1769-1821) and his friend Talley (Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, 1754-1838) in great joy. The cartoon mocks Napoleon's plan to invade Britain, suggesting that such a plan was conceived by a devious Napoleon, who would thus free himself from opposition in the army and navy by sending them to certain death. Staged on the northern French coast, with the castle of Dover (England) visible in the distance, Napoleon sits on Talleyrand's shoulders, holding a rolled up document, inscribed Talleyrand's plan for the invasion of Great Britain, through which he looks, as through a long view, at the scene of the destruction of his ships by cannon, rejoicing and encouraging the British efforts My good fortune never leaves me! I shall now have to send the hundreds of French cut-throats that frighten me! Bravo Johnny! Bomb the Johnny!". EDITORS COMMENTS
In this satirical cartoon by James Gillray, titled "The destruction of the French warships or Little Boney and his friend Talley in great joy," we see Napoleon Bonaparte and Charles Maurice de Talleyrand celebrating the destruction of their own fleet. The scene is set on the northern French coast, with the castle of Dover visible in the distance. Napoleon sits triumphantly on Talleyrand's shoulders, holding a rolled-up document labeled "Talleyrand's plan for the invasion of Great Britain." Through this document, he gleefully watches as his ships are destroyed by cannon fire. He exclaims, "My good fortune never leaves me! I shall now have to send the hundreds of French cut-throats that frighten me! Bravo Johnny! Bomb the Johnny!" This cartoon mocks Napoleon's failed plan to invade Britain, suggesting that it was a devious scheme to rid himself of opposition within his army and navy. Despite their defeat, Napoleon and Talleyrand find humor in their misfortune. Gillray's sharp wit and detailed imagery capture the absurdity of war and political intrigue. This print serves as a reminder that even powerful leaders like Napoleon can be brought down by their own hubris.
