The 18th London Regiment or, as it is more popularly known, the London Irish Rifles, is a territorial unit of the Royal Ulster Rifles of the Regular Army. The battle honours of the Regiment show service in the South African War and in many engagements of the Great War. In 1937 the caubeen was adopted as the official head-dress for the regiment in honour of the King's Coronation of that year; we illustrate the drum-major in full dress uniform inspecting the pipers, who are wearing the caubeen for the first time. The caubeen, in style somewhat similar to the Scottish tam-o'-shanter, is a traditional head-dress of the Irish people.
