The Royal Scots wearing the Royal tartan (colour photo)
8668621 The Royal Scots wearing the Royal tartan (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Royal Scots wearing the Royal tartan. The Royal Scots are one of the oldest regiments in the British Army, and in the Army List they rank first among the Infantry of the Line. In 1933 His late Majesty King George V granted to the pipers of the regiment the honour of wearing the Royal Stuart tartan, which is worn by members of the Royal Family, and which was referred to by His late Majesty as "my personal tartan." It was about the twelfth century that the tartan became adopted for general use in the Highlands, although fifteen hundred years earlier a similar garment had been worn by the Celts. It is the custom among the majority of Scottish Regiments to embody the tartan in some part of their uniform.
