PCT4274460 Carnac menhir alignments. Drawing by Victor Hugo grave by Meaulle. Extract from the text of Hugo (En voyage en Bretagne, 11 August 1834): " My dear friend, you cannot figure yourself as Celtic monuments are strange and sinister. In Karnac, I had almost a moment of despair. These prodigious stones were almost all thrown down by the foolish peasants who make them walls and huts. All the dolmens, an exception with a cross, are on the ground. Only the Peulvens (standing stones) remain... The Karnac Peulvens have an immense effect. They are countless and sheltered in long avenues. The entire monument, with its erased cromlechs and its destroyed dolmens, covered a plain of more than two leagues. Now we see nothing but ruin. It was a unique thing that is no longer. Stupid country! stupid people! stupid government!" by Meaulle, Fortune Louis (1844-1901); (add.info.: Carnac menhir alignments. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mysterious and ancient Carnac menhir alignments, as depicted in a drawing by Victor Hugo and engraved by Meaulle. The text from Hugo's journey to Brittany in 1834 adds a poignant layer to the image, describing his despair at seeing these prodigious stones thrown down and destroyed by foolish peasants. Despite the devastation, the standing Peulvens still stand tall, casting an immense effect on the observer. Hugo's words convey a sense of loss for this unique monument that once covered a vast plain of two leagues. The ruined dolmens and erased cromlechs speak to a forgotten past, where Celtic monuments held both strangeness and sinister beauty. The artist's rendering of this scene brings forth the haunting atmosphere of Karnac, with its countless stones sheltered in long avenues. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of the importance of preserving our historical heritage and respecting ancient sites like Carnac. It serves as a powerful reminder of the folly of human actions that can lead to irreversible destruction. Let us learn from history and protect these sacred places for future generations to marvel at their enigmatic beauty.
