Chinese False Colours Flag, c.1926 (cotton)
7340523 Chinese False Colours Flag, c.1926 (cotton) by Chinese School (20th century) ; 119.4x106.7 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: A flag captured from a Chinese pirate steam launch by Lieutenant J.A.H. Hunter of HMS Nessus during 1926 in the Canton Region. It consists of two flags on same hoist. The smaller upper one shows the Kuomintang white sun in a blue sky design. The lower flag has the Chinese characters YUE JUN DIYI SHI SHIZHANG (Flag of the Divisional Commander of the First Division of the Army of Guangdong) and the large single character Li (the surname of Li Jishen, commander in chief of the Guangdong Army). The characters are resist dyed, showing white on a blue background and the flags are machine sewn with the hoist on the right. As the design is a version of an official Chinese government flag, it is presumably false colours.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures the Chinese False Colours Flag, dating back to 1926. The flag was captured from a Chinese pirate steam launch by Lieutenant J.A.H. Hunter of HMS 'Nessus' in the Canton Region. It features two flags on the same hoist - the upper one displaying the Kuomintang white sun in a blue sky design, while the lower flag bears Chinese characters indicating it as the Flag of the Divisional Commander of the First Division of the Army of Guangdong.
The intricate design on this cotton flag includes resist dyed characters in white against a blue background, with machine-sewn details and hoist positioned on the right side. As an adaptation of an official Chinese government flag, it is believed to be false colours - a deceptive practice common among pirates and corsairs during that era.
This historical artifact not only showcases traditional Chinese script and symbolism but also sheds light on maritime piracy and deceitful practices prevalent at that time. Preserved at the National Maritime Museum in London, this piece serves as a reminder of past conflicts and power struggles in East Asia during the early 20th century.
