Bearing British War Department broad arrow and view marks.
The American six chamber Colt 1851 Navy revolver was invented by Samuel Colt. Five thousand were purchased for British Army use in the Crimean War (1854-56) and distributed to officers and infantry sergeant-majors. A much larger number were purchased for issue to the Royal Navy. Although the term A NavyA refers to the engraving on the cylinder and not to its specific use by naval forces, initial orders in 1854 were destined for the British Baltic fleet. Many officers also purchased Colts privately to take with them to the Crimea. Because of wartime pressures the War Department ownership and inspection marks usually stamped on the frame and grips of these weapons were not applied until after their return to England for refurbishment once the Crimean campaign was over.); eNational Army Museum; American, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Colt 1851 Navy Model . 36 in percussion revolver, captured beautifully in this photo print, is a true testament to the ingenuity of Samuel Colt. This American six-chambered marvel was not only a weapon but also a symbol of power and authority during its time. With its British War Department broad arrow and view marks proudly displayed, it is clear that this particular revolver had an intriguing history. During the Crimean War (1854-56), five thousand of these revolvers were purchased for use by the British Army, specifically distributed among officers and infantry sergeant-majors. Additionally, a significant number found their way into the hands of Royal Navy personnel. Interestingly enough, despite being referred to as "Navy" the term actually refers to the intricate engraving on the cylinder rather than its specific naval usage. The initial batch ordered in 1854 was intended for deployment with the British Baltic fleet. It's worth noting that many officers went above and beyond official channels to acquire these Colts privately for their personal use during their service in Crimea. Due to wartime pressures, ownership and inspection marks from the War Department were not applied until after these weapons returned to England for refurbishment once the campaign concluded. This print allows us a glimpse into history - a moment frozen in time when power rested within one's grasp with every pull of this remarkable Colt 1851 Navy Model . 36 percussion revolver.
