How films are made: Snow Scene (colour litho)
8660318 How films are made: Snow Scene (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Snow Scene. This scene was actually built upon the same stage as that upon which the "Rome Express" Engine, illustrated on card No 9, was built, and is an example of the many different scenes that can be made in the modern film studio. The "snow" is composed chiefly of a mixture of naphtha and salt, which is almost the same as crushed moth balls. This substance has been found not only to look realistic, but to make the correct "crunchy" sound when walked upon. The illustration is of a scene from the film, "Turkey Time." EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate process of creating a snow scene for a film in the 20th century. The scene, part of the movie "Turkey Time," was meticulously crafted on a studio stage using a mixture of naphtha and salt to mimic the appearance and sound of real snow. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this production, from the snowy landscape to the crunching sound underfoot.
The image is not just a snapshot from a film set; it's a testament to the creativity and innovation that goes into making movies come alive on screen. It showcases how filmmakers use clever techniques and materials to transport audiences into different worlds and environments.
As we admire this colourful lithograph, we are reminded of the artistry behind filmmaking and how even something as simple as fake snow can add depth and realism to a scene. It's an intriguing glimpse into the behind-the-scenes magic that brings our favourite films to life, making us appreciate all the hard work that goes into creating movie magic.
