EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures Francois de Lorraine, Duke of Guise (1519-1563), in all his regal splendor. Dressed in court wear, the Duke exudes power and authority. His brown cape lined with ermine adds a touch of luxury to his ensemble, while his cream doublet slashed to reveal white fabric beneath showcases his impeccable fashion sense. A sword slung from his shoulder serves as a reminder of the Duke's military prowess and readiness for battle. However, it is the protruding codpiece that truly catches the eye - a symbol of virility and masculinity during this era. Handcolored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, F. Laguillermie, this illustration comes from Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) published in Paris in 1867. Georges Duplessis was an esteemed curator at the Bibliotheque nationale who dedicated himself to preserving historical prints like these. Meanwhile, Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard was not only an artist but also an interior designer known for his work on public buildings and churches. This image offers us a glimpse into the opulent world of French nobility during the Renaissance period - a time when fashion played an essential role in displaying one's status and influence within society.
