EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent helmet badge, belonging to the 12th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry from 1861-1901. Crafted with exquisite detail and adorned in gilt, this emblem represents the rich history and legacy of British colonial rule in India during the 19th century. The badge features the regimental number XII within a garter bearing the inscription "Bengal Cavalry" all elegantly surmounted by an Imperial Crown. This symbolizes both power and authority, reflecting the regiment's role as defenders of British interests in India. Formed in 1861 following the Indian Mutiny of 1857, this cavalry unit played a crucial role in various military campaigns. Notably, they participated in the Abyssinian campaign of 1868 and served valiantly during the Second Afghan War from 1878 to 1880. After their service in Mesopotamia during World War One (1914-1918), this esteemed regiment merged with the renowned 11th Prince of Wales's Own Lancers to form what is now known as the illustrious 5th King Edward's Own Probyn's Horse. Preserved within London's National Army Museum, this remarkable artifact is part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection. Its presence serves as a testament to bravery, sacrifice, and imperial ambition that shaped British military history on foreign shores.
