EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Henry VIII's rosary, a remarkable piece of religious artistry from the 16th century. Crafted by the Flemish School, this boxwood rosary is part of The Devonshire Collections at Chatsworth. Owned by King Henry VIII himself, it comprises a ring with a hanging cross, ten Ave beads, and a large bead for Pater Noster. The intricate carvings on this rosary are truly awe-inspiring. Every inch has been meticulously adorned with biblical scenes and symbols of faith. Notably, the hinged Pater bead reveals two exquisite biblical scenes within its confines while displaying the royal arms on its exterior. On one side of the cross, Christ and the four Evangelists are depicted in stunning detail. On the other side, we find representations of the four Latin Fathers. Each individual bead carries its own unique carvings portraying various aspects of Christianity such as Apostles, Sentences of Creed, Prophets and Sybils alongside scenes from both Old and New Testaments. This extraordinary work exemplifies not only Henry VIII's devotion to his Catholic faith but also his appreciation for fine craftsmanship. It serves as a testament to his reign as King of England during an era when religion played an integral role in shaping society.
