The old 28th Foot, now the 1st Battalion Gloucester Regiment, and this unique honour was won on 21 March 1801, before Alexandria, when the battalion was attacked simultaneously in front and rear. The Commanding Officer ordered the rear rank to turn about, so that the soldiers fought back to back. The enemy was repulsed, and the 28th were awarded the unparalleled honour of wearing their number "28" on the front and back of their head-dress.
