Do You Know: Why "threshold"? (colour litho)

8668106 Do You Know: Why "threshold"? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Why "threshold"? In Tudor times it was customary to strew loose rushes on the floor as a covering, and a board was placed at doorways or openings to prevent the rushes being kicked outside. This board was a "rushold", and in the passage of time the name has become threshold. Afterwards rushes were plaited to prevent them moving when trodden upon, and this foreshadows to-day's floor coverings. Rushes were a repository for all manner of things, and so the custom of placing potpourri and sweet smelling herbs in rooms links up, which has developed into the present-day practice of bringing flowers into the house. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph print titled "Do You Know: Why 'threshold'?" by the English School of the 20th century offers a fascinating glimpse into Tudor times and the origins of a common household term. In this detailed illustration, we see how the custom of strewing rushes on floors led to the creation of thresholds as a way to keep them in place. The informative caption accompanying this artwork explains that rushes were once used as floor coverings, with boards placed at doorways to prevent them from being kicked outside. Over time, these boards became known as "rusholds," eventually evolving into the word we know today as threshold. Furthermore, rushes were later plaited to prevent them from moving when trodden upon, foreshadowing modern-day floor coverings. The practice of placing potpourri and sweet-smelling herbs in rooms also originated from using rushes as repositories for various items. Through intricate details and historical context, this print not only educates us about etymology but also connects us to centuries-old traditions that have shaped our present-day practices. It serves as a reminder of how everyday objects and customs hold rich histories waiting to be discovered and appreciated.
