EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases one of a pair of exquisite George III giltwood armchairs, dating back to 1765. Designed by the renowned architect Robert Adam and crafted by the master furniture maker Thomas Chippendale, these chairs are true works of art. Measuring at an impressive 107x75.5x75 cm, each chair features a padded back, arms, and seat covered in luxurious blue floral cut-velvet silk damask. The elegant shape is accentuated by foliage-bound reeding framing the rectangular back and paterae adorning the corners. A pierced anthemia takes center stage on the scrolled serpentine toprail. The attention to detail is remarkable as scrolled foliate supports with flowerhead terminals adorn the padded arms. The deep seat-rail boasts a husk border carved with a shell that gracefully transitions into scrolling foliage ending in winged sphinxes. Cabriole legs topped with anthemions suspending ribbon-tied wreaths complete this masterpiece. Hairy paw feet headed by a beaded girdle enclose anti-friction castors for added functionality. These chairs bear incised constructional numerals and exhibit signs of meticulous craftsmanship throughout their structure. Originally oil-gilt, they now boast water-gilding over a thin lacquer while still retaining traces of their original splendor. With its rich history and undeniable beauty, this print captures the essence of Georgian elegance and serves as a testament to the exceptional talent of both Adam and Chippendale in creating timeless pieces that continue to captivate admirers today.
