by Kane, Elisha (1820-57) (after); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Second Grinnell Expedition of 1853 was an American effort, financed by Henry Grinnell, to determine the fate of the Franklins lost expedition. Led by Dr. Elisha Kane, the team explored areas northwest of Greenland, now called Grinnell Land. While failing to determine the fate of Sir John Franklin, the expedition set a new record for northward penetration, delineated 960 mi (1, 540 km) of unexplored coastline north of 82A latitude, and discovered the long-sought open Polar Sea. Kane collected valuable geographical, climate and magnetic observations before abandoning the brig Advance to the pack ice in 1855. While three members of the crew were lost, the epic journey of the survivors inspired the public as a vivid tale of Arctic survival.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Parting Hawsers off Godsend Ledge" is an illustration from The Second Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin, conducted in 1856. The engraving, created by Elisha Kane and now part of a private collection, depicts a pivotal moment during the American expedition financed by Henry Grinnell. Led by Dr. Elisha Kane, this daring team ventured into uncharted territories northwest of Greenland, known today as Grinnell Land. Their primary objective was to uncover the fate of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition. Although they were unable to solve that mystery, their efforts yielded remarkable achievements. During their journey, the explorers set a new record for northward penetration and meticulously mapped over 960 miles (1,540 kilometers) of previously unexplored coastline beyond the 82nd latitude. Moreover, they made an extraordinary discovery—the long-sought open Polar Sea. The image captures a poignant moment when hawsers are being parted off Godsend Ledge—an event that symbolizes both progress and uncertainty faced by these intrepid adventurers. While facing treacherous conditions and losing three crew members along the way, those who survived inspired the public with their incredible tale of Arctic survival. Kane's illustrations not only document geographical details but also serve as testaments to human resilience in extreme environments. This particular print showcases his ability to capture both beauty and danger within one frame—a testament to his artistic prowess and dedication to scientific exploration.
