Train ferries have been adopted on the Great Lakes of America, in Denmark, on Lake Baikal, on the Baltic and elsewhere, the idea having originated in England about 1864, when Messrs Wigham Richardson built a train ferry for Germany. The ferry-boats of the well-known Harwich-Zeebrugge service, which travel at about 13 knots, can each accommodate 54 railway coaches on its four tracks.
