Past & Present: The Organ (colour litho)

8668702 Past & Present: The Organ (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Organ. Early Form of Organ. The pipes of early organs at first sounded all together, those not required being silenced by means of the fingers or hands. Slides or tongues of wood were then placed beneath the pipes to control the admission of the wind. These are shown on the right of the wind-chest, and may be said to represent the keyboard of the organ of to-day. Modern Organ. The picture shows part of one of the largest electric organs in the world with some 18,000 pipes and 232 stops. It really comprises eight organs; great, choir, swell, solo, echo, chorus, ethereal, and pedal, besides a piano, chimes, gongs, and harp. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the evolution of the organ from its early form to the modern electric marvels of today. The image showcases the intricate workings of an early organ, where pipes were controlled by fingers or hands and wooden slides regulated the admission of wind. These primitive mechanisms paved the way for the sophisticated keyboards we see in organs today. In stark contrast, on the other side of this print, we are presented with a glimpse into one of the largest electric organs in existence. With a staggering 18,000 pipes and 232 stops, this musical behemoth is actually comprised of eight separate organs - each serving a unique purpose such as great, choir, swell, solo, echo, chorus, ethereal and pedal. In addition to these components are added features like piano keys, chimes, gongs and even a harp. This juxtaposition between past and present not only highlights how far technology has advanced in music but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation over time. The harmonious blend of tradition and progress depicted in this print is truly awe-inspiring.
