8668697 Past & Present: The Railway Carriage (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Railway Carriage. Early Railway Carriages. In 1833 some railway trucks were mere trolleys upon which the passengers travelled seated in their own carriages! Covered railway carriages with accommodation for luggage on the roof were provided for passengers who paid 2 1/2d or 3d a mile, while those travelling at cheaper rates had to be content with open carriages. Modern Dining Saloon. Contrast that with this comfortable dining saloon provided for third-class passengers to-day. The woodwork is of polished mahogany, the upholstered seats covered in leather and the floor carpeted. Electric lighting and fans are installed, while the fare provided is excellent. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the evolution of railway carriages from the early 19th century to the modern day. In the past, passengers traveled in simple trolleys or open carriages, with only those paying higher fares enjoying covered accommodations. Fast forward to today, and we see a luxurious dining saloon for third-class passengers, complete with polished mahogany woodwork, leather upholstered seats, and carpeted floors.
The contrast between past and present is striking - from basic transportation to a comfortable and stylish travel experience. The advancements in technology are evident with electric lighting and fans installed for passenger comfort. The evolution of railway carriages reflects not only progress but also the changing expectations of travelers over time.
