Past & Present: The Railway Signal (colour litho)

8668699 Past & Present: The Railway Signal (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Railway Signal. Early Railway Signals. Our first picture shows the very primitive method of signalling in use on the GWR in 1837. The ball at the top of the mast indicated "All clear"; it was lowered or removed to indicate "Danger." At night a lantern was attached to the ball. Modern Signal Gantry. At a big railway centre where there are a large number of tracks the many signals required are carried upon a bridge or gantry, the supports for which take up comparatively little space. The platform is wide enough to allow men to clean and adjust the signals, and to fill and light the lamps when required.
